Math practice today... We use workbooks to practice skills that we are working on. The books are a place to demonstrate learning, and used as such can be a valuable tool. Here Nina uses counting stones to help her with addition problems.
“'Reciting means saying the numbers from memory in chronological order, whereas counting involves understanding that each item in the set is counted once and that the last number stated is the amount for the entire set,' said Louis Manfra, an assistant professor in Missouri University's Department of Human Development and Family Studies. 'When children are just reciting, they’re basically repeating what seems like a memorized sentence. When they’re counting, they’re performing a more cognitive activity in which they’re associating a one-to-one correspondence with the object and the number to represent a quantity.'”
Marble Run! The kiddos spent some good time working a new battery powered (:/) marble run today. It had been previously set up so the next step will be coming up with a contraption of our own...
Rowan built the block stand and ramp and the kiddos opened the middle opening on the elevator. I love how creative these kiddos are, and how they figure out how to use materials effectively!
Later Otis created his own math "worksheet". It is very valuable for children to experiment with numbers. Here Otis kept piggy back adding, and in the process we talked about place value.
